iMac just shuts down?

My 1.8 GHz Imac just shuts down when I am working. I am running Firefox 3.6.8, Quickbooks Pro 6.0 and Appleworks. Working between the applications. I recently upgraded the memory to 2 GB DDR SDRAM and upgraded the Operating software to OS 10.5.8. Before installation of upgrades I had no problems. Any suggestions on how to fix the problem? Another note: my Quickbooks file suffered a fatal error an cannot be used since this started happening. :-( HELP!!!!

First try reseating and/or swapping the RAM. You can bring it back to the original RAM configuration and see if that helps. If that doesn't change anything try a PRAM reset. Turn computer off, hold down the ALT-CMD-R-P keys and restart. Keep the keys pressed till you hear at least 2 start gongs. If that doesn't remedy the symptoms i'd try a clean install of everything.

Shut down again. I was able to work for about 30 minutes. Then lost all power. I restarted after about 15 minutes, resetting the PRAM as suggested. I'll prepare to do a clean install anyway.

Thanks for your help. Followed your suggestions, also reset SMU. Everything appears to be functioning properly for now. Would you suggest a clean install at this point?
