black screen appear and preference pane message

when i open laptop only black screen appear and i ouldn't open any thing and when i open system performance and choose any thing from it there message appear (could not load ....... preference pane)?

DO HEAR any sound at all, how old is this laptop? if this is a lcd back screen it could mean the back light is out, in the screen.
