Can dead USB ports be repaired?

I was in the process of moving my old G5 and was re-attaching peripheral items. When the power source was applied to an Adaptec 7-port hub it shorted with an audible pop. Since that event I received a screen message that stated "USB over-current", now none of the USB ports on the G5 will do anything. Is this problem a damaged motherboard and a replacement is in order or is there something else that may fix my problem?

I had one that was hit by lighting and fried the USB ports. I got a Sonnet PCI - USB board and that solved the problem. http://www.sonnettech.com/product/allegr...

I tried cheaper cards and they did not work.

Would you recommend this board at around $60 or would Sonnet's PRO version at around $120 be a better choice? Are both boards compatible with the older OS Tiger? Because of the old G5 using a pair of the Power PC processors, I don't believe it is possible to upgrade beyond Tiger. Your advice is appreciated.

Once your motherboard has encountered a short circuit, there is no solution other than replacement. Make sure that you responsibly dispose of the old motherboard (and no, throwing it in the trash is not responsible; take it to an e-waste recycling center for proper recycling of hazardous materials such as heavy metals). You can replace the motherboard with another motherboard, but iFixit does not offer PowerMac G5 motherboards.
