I have an iPhone 5, working fine except that even when the signal strength indicators show a good signal, the phone had poor audio quality on cellular calls. Also slow internet speeds. It seems that the signal is being measured as being good but in reality or somewhere down the signal line it's degraded. If anyone has any ideas I'd be really grateful to them.

could possibly be oily finger marks inside if its had a repair? get some iso and clean down any fingerprints or residue on the motherboard and surrounding parts

Thanks ProTech. I used a liquid degreaser from ALDI. I hope that would have the same effect.

I opened the phone last night and noticed a few things so I had a tinker and managed to solve the problem. The three things I did were to clean with a degreaser as protect suggested, the cellular antenna connections and the point at which the antenna cable connected to the motherboard; there was damage to the antenna connector furthest from the lightning port so i scraped off a millimetre of the black coating and reconnected it ensuring it was trapped under the ring and firmly screwed; I suspected that the antenna cable beneath the plate near the battery connector should have had a foam pad on top to prevent shorts with the plate so I stuck a few sq milimetres of gaffer tape onto the underside of the plate. As is usually the case with me I'm not particularly methodical so I can't say which one solved the problem but so far so good. If it returns the first thing I'll do is to renew the antenna.
