blue screen only after start up

after rebooting, the screen is grey and the little wheel spins. after that the blue screen appears and that is as far as it gets.

Update (10/17/2015)

WHEN BOOTING UP THE SCREEN COMES ON AND THE SPINNING WHEEL. SOMETIMES THE SCREEN IS FUZZY. OTHER TIMES IT BOOTS ALL THE WAY UP TO THE BLUE SCREEN THEN THE IS LITTLE BLUE HORIZANTAL LINES AND IT GOES NO FURTHER, I'D SURE APPRECIATE SOME ASSISTANCE ON THIS. THANK YOU TERRY

Start up from your original system installation disk, hold down the "D" key and see if you can run diagnostics and let us know any codes it gives you.

Well I would say it's not reading your hard drive , this is sometimes called the blue screen of death. Death of your HD , get another HD or take it to Apple

Apple does not offer repairs on this old of a machine.
