Why do I have to wake-sleep-wake to get screen response?

I just replaced my screen and now to be able to "slide to unlock" I have to wake my phone up, put it back to sleep and then wake it up again before I get screen response. After this the screen works completely fine. Wouldn't be that big of a deal, but it does mean I am unable to answers calls which is a base function of a phone... Since the screen is fully functional after that point I am leaning towards thinking it is a software glitch. I am going to attempt a factory restore, but am looking for other suggestions in case that doesn't work. I have already rebooted several times, force restarted a couple times and reinstalled the screen. Thanks in advance!
