Cant upload photos from hard drive or iPhone

Im having difficulty uploading my iphotos library from external hard drive, and all photos from my iPhone 6 (only camera roll photos seem to work) onto my new macbook. Any help is appreciated

What kind of dock are you using?

I use usb for the Hard drive, and usb and airdrop for the iPhone but I'm always unable to select any photos albums other than the camera roll.
