my ps3 fat has power (shows red light) but wont start (show green light) so im going to get another fat ps3. if i switch my hdd from this old one to another 1st gen ps3 will it keep all my data?

If you cant boot it and use the transfer utility I am afraid you have lost all your data. My shop does reflows in these cases so users can backup the data. Many times it will make the playstation work fine for months or years but not always. A full BGA rework is about the only solution for a permanent fix.
