fan & drive spin, light on - everything stops

Hey everybody,

Computer was in sleep mode and when we tried to wake it, the fan spun as if the unit was overheating. Forced shutdown (unplug).

No I've tried many times to restart. The fan & drive start to spin. The light comes on. Then the unit stops. This happens in less than 10 seconds. The screen never turns on. It never gets to the step of booting up and looking for startup.

I'm guessing it is the logic board or the power supply.

Any help? How can I find and isolate the problem?

thanks,

T

I've checked that out. It is a moot point:

I get no start-up sound.

I've tried the traditional methods of resetting the PRAM, etc. No avail.

This is, apparently, the annoying a1144 model where you don't have the diagnostic LEDs (at least not visible when the case is opened).

Removing the front cover and screen didn't show any obvious signs of something being "fried"

What should be my next step?

Hi Tommyp I am including another link that may help. I also remember reading somewhere that if the USB port worked when you turned the computer on the power supply was ok--you might check that. Let me know if this helps. Ralph

Found the link about the USB power supply check. Was for a Intel iMac- don't know if would apply in your case but I am including it for you. Ralph
