converting mac mini to an Apple TV?

I have a Mac mini from mid 2006 with a 1.66 Core 2 duo. I wanted to use it to stream netflix and iTunes to the TV and it does great for SD video but struggles with anything more.

I was wondering if upgrading the processor would help with that. at this point, i can get a 3.0 ghz core 2 duo on ebay for $10, but i'm wondering if that will be compatible and if anything else could be done to help with 1080p streaming?

Thank you!

Apple TV boxes now sell for $69. A refurb from Apple is $59 with a full warranty. What's your time worth?

You could make your mini into a back-end server for your Apple TV to hold all of your iTunes content. All it requires is enough storage to hold your stuff and a copy of OS-X running iTunes. You could even strikeout all of the unneeded apps and stuff to free up more space.
