Can I install a 2TB SSHD on my iMac?

I just tore down my iMac and found that it had a 500GB WD Blue HDD. I want to upgrade the HDD but I would prefer if the upgrade was tom something like a 3.5" SSHD, such as this one: http://www.amazon.com/Seagate-Desktop-3-...

Is it possible to install said SSHD when the iMac came installed with a WD Blue? If not, is it possible to install a 2TB Seagate Barracuda or will it have to be a WD drive?

Did this hard drive have a plug in for the heat sensor?

Yes, the hard drive did have a temperature sensor. I assume you're referring to the 8-pin connector right next to the SATA power and data connectors?

Yes it can be done, but you'll need to swap out the sensor cable to the correct one for your drive. Here's the list of the P/N's for the different cables:

Cable, Temp Sensor, Hard Drive

  • 922-9215 - Hitachi
  • 922-9216 - Seagate
  • 922-9622 - Western Digital

So how would I go about that? Should I buy the SSHD, then buy the cable (in this case the part number would be 922-9216) and then install the drive and plug the same cable in the iMac? And where could I purchase said cables?

It's not much more work to swap out the sensor cable. All you'll need to do is loosen up the logic board enough to fish out the old cable and slide in the new one. As to finding it just google it Apple 922-9216 there you'll find quite a few outfits that offer it. So, in a nutshell you'll need to order both the cable and the drive and put them both in.
