getting to the latch

Kenmore elite oasis - broken latch lock - is there an easy way to fix this? Or better yet, disable it? there are no children in the family or the neighborhood, so disabling is not the issue. Hasn't someone else had this problem. I've watched all the videos, but every machine has a different way to get TO the latch.

Update

I have it pretty well apart, but I can't get the top off to get to the latch mechanism.
