Ghosting trackpad when typing.

Randomly while typing, the cursor flips to a different part of the screen. I would normally think my thumbs are hitting the track pad, and sometimes that is the case, but there are times when i know i'm not touching the trackpad and the cursor still moves. is this a sign that my trackpad is wearing out? i asked the geniuses last time i had it in the shop and they didn't see it happen and since it happens only randomly, i can't get it to reproduce while i'm there. thoughts?

thanks for the suggestions. the laptop has been opened several times (replacement keyboard for the beer i spilled in it and a new logic board) but last time was by apple and that was over a year ago. still, could very well have gotten some dust in the connectors as the clear plastic shield isn't as solid as it was when new. i'll give those ideas a try and see if it keeps happening.

It sounds like user error or a trackpad failure. Dirt can cause this too. Start by cleaning the trackpad, and if it keeps happening your trackpad is failing.

You can also check the connections for the trackpad. This usually is not the problem, but on this model it's easy enough to check. All you need to do is remove the battery, and reconnect the cables it hooks up to. You do not need to disassemble the machine.

If this doesn't do it, then you have to replace the whole palmrest since the trackpad is not an individual component.

+ Good answer. Additionally, you can find the guide to take your laptop apart and access underneath the trackpad by clicking here.

I am having the same problem with my 15" macbook pro and so is my sister. The cursor will randomly move around when typing. Mine is two yrs old hers is less than a year. It's not a loose wire or dirt.
