iMac chimes but the screen goes black on startup

Also tried connecting it to a laptop to access my files. It recognized the hard drive but the drive wouldn't mount. Any ideas what's wrong? Can it be repaired? Thanks.

If you connected it to another Intel Mac via firewire in target mode. Did you try to run Disk Utilities on it?

Hi Mayer. This was what I tried but the drive won't mount even though the software identified my hard drive:(
