What is my password?

I bought a used SSD. After I installed it, I started the computer. The computer started nicely and went to the log-in page. This page showed an account named "Home" and asked for my password. As I say, this is a used SSD. How do I find the password?

Can you give us the last four digits of your serial number so we can correctly identify which model you have.

by

The last four characters of the serial number are not digits, but letters: "DJYC."

I called iFixit. The clerk gave me an easier solution: start up while holding "Command R." That takes me to Disk Utility, where I erased the hard drive and restored from my backup.

You probably need to reformat the drive. Do this in Target Mode or use a universal adapter. Universal Drive Adapter

Mayer, remember these drives are M.2 SSD's. I don't think the universal adapter will work here.

by

Dan, yes and no. He didn't tell us which MBA he has, so it could even be using a ZIF drive. If an SSD drive goes in, then I would guess it has a 2.5".

by

Good point Mayer! I keep forgetting the first version had a ZIF micro drive.

by

Sadly it's a M.2 blade SSD. The other option here is to mount it in this case: Envoy USB case. I also like Mayer's idea of Target Mode if you have access to a second Mac.

Sounds like you'll need to return it.

Now that we know your exact machine, Dan's answer is correct. But in Target mode with another Mac, you can reformat the drive and install a new system.

by

My understanding is that Target Mode works only with FireWire (https://support.apple.com/en-us/HT1661). The MBA does not have FireWire.

by

No, you can also do it with Thunderbolt or even Ethernet connected macs
