Is it the LCD

I have a Compaq Presario V5309wm with trouble the display. Most of the time the view is good for the fist 1.5 inches and then It goes dark. The further you down the screen it changes to white,, if I am looking at the BIOS (External Monitor is perfect.) If I am looking at windows the instead of the lower part being it is is vertical lines of color, (External Monitor remains Perfect). The lines of color appear to change as the colors change on the monitor, yet it does not appear to have any intelligence driving the horizontal scan.

Is it the LCD, INVERTER, MOTHERBOARD, or something else? How Can I tell?

Being that it works perfectly in an external monitor u can pretty much rule out the motherboard. I would first try to replace the inverter, if that doesn't work, then your display might need to be replaced.

I talked to Compaq customer and they are the only reason I even considered the motherboard. I did think the it would be the display. With many suggestions it was recommended that I should swap out by cost inverter, back-light and then the LCD. Thank you for the suggestion and I believe you are right. I will try to let you know as soon as I do. thanks 4 help
