installed new hd but cant detect when going to install new os

so like the title says i replaced the hd on my 2010 macbook 2.4ghz processor intell core 2 duo and when i put the install dvd in it starts up ask me for my language but when i goto disk utilites it only shows my install dvd. anyone have this problem any help would begreatly appresiated as i need this for a trip imtaking and dont have money to buy a new computer

Your hard drive cable may be bad, but also tell us the make and model of the drive you're trying to install.
