What causes the temperature sensor to activate on a iPhone 4s that hasn't been charged in a week?

First i would try a new battery as this sometimes will resolve the issue. If not then i would think that there is a damaged IC or Inductor which can become hot causing the temperature sensor to display the temp warning. I had a similar issue and it turned out to be the Wifi IC which i had to remove in order to use the phone and eventually soldered a new one in its place.
