Apple logo shows then changes to a white screen then dies

Hi there

I've got an iPhone that was given to me but when i turn it on the apple logo shows for about a second before the screen goes white for around half a second than the phone dies

I have tried to restore the phone but when it gets to the "waiting for iPhone" stage it obviously cant start up

Any help is appreciated
