replaced screen and it would not power up. Tried shorting the battery and got a white screen for a few seconds then it went dead again. The little spring was missing when I opened it, but it was working when screen got cracked. I've taking it apart several times to short the battery but all attempts have been unsuccessful. Tried plugging it in and still got nothing.

Do you try reconnecting the old lcd to see if there was any luck? Also try a restore in iTunes.

Does itunes recognise it?
I always ask the customer to drop battery down to about 10% as that way, when I get the white screen, I can easily run the battery out.
Have you inspected the board carefully where you removed the stuck down shield to see if any of the components have come off?
