Volume flex not working after repair?

Fixing for a friend. Usually a simple repair. He tore the flex trying to replace the screen. I put a new one in, tested, no tears, hold switch and power button work, but no volume. clicks but no response. help? thanks

Disconnect the power-mute-volume cable, clean the connector with a cotton swab dipped in 90%+ isopropyl alcohol, re-seat gently and firmly.

Do the same for charging dock cable.

No change? Test the buttons while charging dock cable is disconnected from the board.

If still no change, you probably installed defective cable. Happens a lot.

Friend or you could've also knocked off something during initial repair. Check around the P-M-V connector on the board for missing/broken/damaged components.
