Sadly, it's the LCD display that's broken here. What likely happened is the edge of the lid got a bang which has dislodged the driver logic from the solder pads on the glass. Nothing to fix here other than replacing the display. While it's possible to replace the LCD panel alone it's a bit of work. You may find replacing the compete lid assembly will be much easier. Here's the IFIXIT guide: MacBook Pro 15" Unibody Mid 2009 Display Replacement. If you're up to it here's the IFIXIT guide to replacing the LCD alone: MacBook Pro 15" Unibody Mid 2009 LCD Replacement.

Bad LCD, don't kid yourself into it being the cable, that is just an internet myth because people think the cable is $5 and the technician will replace it for $2 if you ask nicely.

99% of the time, the cable is fine.

Find an LP154WE3-TLA1 and enjoy the resolution upgrade. On the 2009 one, the display assembly back cover is NOT one piece, it is actually two that are glued together, and it comes apart on the bottom like crazy, so be careful with the heat.
