Earpiece has not worked since purchase - sensor cables to blame?

Hi all,

I bought an iPhone 5S 64 GB from a friend of mine who used it for an entire year while it had a problem with the earpiece. The problem was that no matter whether in voice calls or using the voice memos app, no sound is played through the earpiece (yes, even over a restore). He simply hates the Apple Store and never took it in during the warranty period. I can verify that it wasn't working when he first got it because I was there that same week. It works great when used with headphones/headset and speakers. Mic works. All liquid damage indicators are white.

I took the phone to the Apple Store, where a Genius bar guy without much technical expertise tried to reproduce the issue and decided that the earpiece needed to be replaced for $60. I thought I could do better so I carefully took the phone apart. I made sure not to sever any ribbon cables and everything came apart fine. I exercised surgical precision and I know I did not stress the cables even though it was very hard. When I finally got it all apart I noticed though that the sensor cable that leads to the front facing cam and what not had some very tiny wear on the black encasing of the flex cable, right on the inner side where the sensor cable was slightly chafed by the metal plate that mounts over it. I sincerely believe that it was the underpaid Apple factory worker that put it together that damaged the flex cable. Does any data run through that sensory cable that would cause the earpiece to fail? I'm thinking that is the original issue.

Answer this question I have this problem too

Another question of mine would be is there any way for Apple to tell if I've taken the device apart? I have used suction cups and wiped all fingerprints off the internal parts of the phone, so from a damage perspective its imperceptible that a civilian has opened the phone. The phone was on during the repair though, but I assume if there is any software monitoring for repair, the logs would be cleared after a factory reset.

The earpiece speaker certainly needs replacing. There's two slots behind the LCD where the microphone plugs in and where the speaker plugs in.

The speaker is a small square with a rounded magnet in the centre, you will see 2 gold springs on the bottom (from what I can remember) and they are pressed down on the gold contacts in order for the speaker to work.

A new ear piece speaker might fix this problem or you may need a new flex cable (the piece with the gold contacts) OR you can try reassemble it properly as maybe the speaker was not making contact.

Apple will not be able to tell unless you have done a bad job of opening it, stripped screws is a give away

Here's a guide for the ear piece speaker:

I've already tried reassembly (to no avail) but I haven't actually set the LCD unit back into the frame so I don't have to re-open it again. It didn't work, and I assume that gold grounding clip has nothing to do with power or data transfer and it's simply to reduce noise/static.

It has to make contact to work. the flex cable gets the power from the logic board so has to be connected for it to work

Not flex cable -- the flex cable is connected. The gold grounding clip was what I was talking about. I also don't see how it would derive power from the grounding clip since there is no contact with the earpiece and the earpiece metal housing plate.

Not sure what you're on about now... the speaker connects to the display through the gold springs.

Try cleaning the contacts, maybe oil is preventing good contact
