Sounds like the Data cable might be pinched on the hinge assembly. If this is the case then it's most likely the culprit for your Airport problems being that all these cables are routed through the hinge assemblies. I would remove the display and re-route these wires or simply replace them now that you're there. It's a pretty pain-staking process, but with a little patience it can be done. My first hands on repair was on that same exact machine and it was for the display assembly. You can do it, just follow this guide: MacBook Core 2 Duo LCD Panel Replacement

Update

Heres a pic courtesy of Markus. It shows the cables in question and where they end up on the Logic Board

+ great answer, the job looks harder than it is - the important word is "patience" ;-)

Thankx Markus, yes patience is key here.

Sounds reasonable, how do I determine which wires to replace and where can I buy them?

by

Just click on the Gear icon for "Parts" right on the top of this page and enter your exact model. all the related parts will appear there. If I were in your shoes, I would replace the inverter, inverter cable, Display Data Cable, and the Airport antennae cables. They're pretty cheap and should be replaced now that your going through this process. Good Luck.

The back and grey cables are the Airport Antennae which also include bluetooth. The display data cable is located on the opposite side of the board under the SATA connector, you will find it in the link I supplied you for the repair.
