Did your display assembly come with the front camera flex attached or just the digitizer/lcd? The most common cure for this issue is that the rubber gasket where the earpiece fits into can pinch and bunch up, blocking sound from the earpiece. Out of 100 cases, I bet 99 are because of the gasket.

What can i try to make this work before i return this screen?

I would detach the display assembly, unscrew the ear piece and re-seat it, paying careful attention to the shape of the rubber gasket as you are pressing it in to make sure it does not pinch underneath. If that is not the cause then I would return the screen for a replacement, if you do not want to move over the old flex and small parts.

It sounds like the earpiece speaker may not be installed correctly (no pun intended). I would recommend following this guide for replacing the earpiece speaker and ensure that all of the contacts are clean. If that doesn't resolve your issue, you may have received a defective part. It is not common with iFixit, but things happen during transit, handling, etc.

Please feel free to contact me directly if I can be of any assistance.

Good luck!

I had this same problem with a replacement display assembly. The rubber gasket that the speaker sits in did seem pinched but after adjusting it the problem of low volume on phone calls still persisted.

There was a black sticker covering the ear speaker grid behind the rubber gasket. You have to remove the rubber gasket to peel this sticker up, then replace rubber gasket, mic, camera, etc...
