Grease leaked into wash tub

Clothes got stained with grease. Was able to remove agitator to expose shaft and discovered it was covered in grease. I assume that gear case seal(s) leaking. Should I attempt to remove and replace seal? Looks like I might need a special tool to take off the next level of retaining nuts. If I go forward, what grease do I put in gearcase?

Sounds like the transmission seal has failed. But this repair is beyond my level of expertise. Sorry.
