What to do when battery display shows no battery?

Mac recently was on table where water was spilled. It shut off after getting wet. we dried it out and it seemed to be working fine. The fan is running constantly now and loud, but that appeared to be the worst of it. We then noticed that the battery display had the "X". When plugging in the charger there is no difference in the battery display AND the light on the charger connection does not illuminate. The battery was at 100% before the water incident and Mac is currently still operating. Please advise.

BE VERY CAREFUL! Damaged Lith-ion batteries can EXPLODE OR START FIRES.

You can't just keep using wet electronics with no repercussions.

Corrosion set in (it will continue to get worse). Compleltey cleaning the logic board and DC-in board may revive the machine. You may need a new battery. You may need a new logic board. Follow some of the Answers for repairing liquid damage from the tags at right to see what you're in for.
