Well sorta ...

  • You can use Skype to create a VoIP call
  • You can use FaceTime to create a video/voice call
  • Depending on your carrier you can make a tunneled call

In all of these you are not creating an analog 3G call which is what Tom is referring to. These are LTE digital connections. The iPad does not offer GSM voice services.

Apple intro'd voice over LTE with the iPhone 6 I don't know if that is possible in the iPad. So that maybe an option as well. Update: VoLTE is not possible with the iPad

I think he meant the calls that are billed onto the SIM card. It is not possible because ipad is not a phone. All the hardwares and softwares are present on iPad cellular models to allow GSM/3G/VoLTE carrier based calls but apple simply chooses to lock them out. Instead only FaceTime/call through iPhone or third party VoIP calls are allowed. Just because Apple doesn't want the iPad to become iPhone.

Thank you Tom

Well.. its the best way to describe it as It's not TCP/IP based ;-} In a voice call you are using a A to D conversion to then send ATM packets across the air. In the case of VoIP the voice call is converted like before (A to D) then placed into a TCP packet then into an IP stream across the air inside the ATM packets.

I'm not sure its really needed. Even if you only have an iPad FaceTime calls are just as good.

I would be great... I’m in a situation where my iPhone was destroyed, and I can’t use any of the messaging apps, because they have to send me a SMS, which I can’t receive (because of the broken phone)

FaceTime is an Apple App, you can only interact with someone who has the FaceTime app (sadly only Apple products). But, you could use Skype with someone who has a Skype client app running on their system.

You can have Android Emulator on your laptop to use your phone, apps on your computer, there is likely an App for what you want to do. But can we run a mini IOS emulator on an Android Tablet for that purpose? Or an IOS Emulator on a laptop?

Aha, upon checking yes, there are apps and likely something will work so you can have an Android tablet, IOS emulator and your Apple Apps running within the Emulator. Diggity!
