No sound or mic during calls only.

So I've seen this problem on a few forums. The phone works fine unless you make a call. When you do, the mic and the speakers will not work. They function with any other application in the phone. The suggested fixes are firmware update (some claim this has worked) and the other is a reflow of the chip that handles the incoming calls(?). I know by the teardown which chip handles the sound on the board, but if anyone has encountered and fixed this issue before, could you give a brother a hand on where to aim the heat?

Be sure your cover is not blocking the microphone on the bottom edge. That is a different microphone than the speaker phone mode or OK Google. That was my problem. I was puzzled for hours and then removed the cover. The phone worked fine. I then put a small hole in the cover [LifeProof] and it works fine. Good luck.

i changed my entire google account and backed up nothing besides my contacts to my sim card. it has been working thank god!! i believe it might have been an app that might have done something to the audio or a virus. but its been working now way longer than it has! yea im super happy be careful what u are downloading from the app store. hope this works!!

by

A friend of mine had to delete facebook messenger, and after that it was fixed!

by

I had this problem too! Drove me crazy!! I tried everything and finally figured it out! :D It was a Bad SIM card reader. I found out that this model is notorious for it to go out at some point. You can have someone fix it for you berween $30.00 to $90.00 or fix it yourself for $6.99 to $15.00. Because no one had the part in stock I chose to order off the internet and watch a YouTube video and Walla!!! It worked! I am wishing you and others the same result! :D

by

I tried all these fixes pretty much.. But what worked for me was I found the little pin hole at bottom of phone by charging port. When I had the phone apart for a sync port replacement, I took the outer plastic shell that was attached to the screen and where the mic hole was I blew air into it really hard with my mouth to clear and dust and debris. Also you will find attached to this outer plastic phone ring a black rubber gasket or something like that and if you have a needle it has a square little black flap that you can move. This covers the mic on the daughterboard. I also tried cleaning gently with a cue tip but ended up breaking this little flap off which I believe is only to block water from entering the mic on the board. Anyways I couldn't take pics as I was repairing my phone but now my voice is not muffled or garbled when someone on the other end of the call is listening, worked like a charm. The person on the other end can hear me clearly now. Hope this helps sorry if I didn't explain it too well.

The firmware update did resolve the issue.

What firmware update and where do I get it from

by

There are 2 ways to do it. I just used the update function built into the OS. This is a link to the tutorial.

http://androidfact.com/samsung-galaxy-s4...

The second option is to use Kies, which requires you to connect the phone to your PC. Here is a link to that tutorial.

http://androidfact.com/update-galaxy-s4-...

If the update doesn't work then you probably have a bad component on the board.

by

I have been having this problem for months and I am now on my third galaxy s4 and I doubt that it has to do with a bad component. I have yet to resolve the problem but I have a feeling it has something to do with Google now and certain apps that are downloaded. Facebook being one of them.

by

Problem here S4 on AT&T with v4.4.4 is coming from: Google Search App | Settings | Voice | "Ok Google" detection | From Any screen is on. When it's on, you'll get 1-2 calls and then you'll stop hearing sound. When off, no problems. Only way to get sound back is phone reboot. After that setting is off, if still having problems then goto App Settings | Google Play Services | Clear cache, clear all data. Reboot phone, make sure setting still off. Re-login to google services/location history services etc.

by

Ear speaker, loud speaker and microphone didn't work only during the cellular calls, but worked perfectly with other applications including Viber and WhatsApp. Upgrade to the newest version fixed the problem. Also with other phone models. Thanks so much!!

The problem for me was in my SD card. I had tried everything before I tried that, and it seemed the more I tried, the worse the problem got. It had been an intermittent problem, so sometimes things would seem to fix it but weren't actually fixing it.

I tried:

-Restart (no fix)

-Restart after removing battery (no fix)

-Restart after removing SIM card (no fix but appeared to work at first)

-New SIM card (no fix but appeared to work at first)

-Phone calls to my service provider (Bell Mobility - Canada) They said contact Samsung

-Phone calls to Samsung ... obviously they said contact Bell Mobility

-Factory Reset ... numerous times (no fix)

-Remove SD Card (fix)

-Install new SD Card (still fixed)

Somewhere along the line, something was installed on my SD card or some corruption on the card made the phone do this. Although I've likely permanently lost some data, my phone works as a phone again.

I have a galaxy4 and I've recently been having same problem my phone calls will nor work but everything else with sound works well in recent days my ear buds or wireless headset won't work either I rebooted my phone last week thinking it was a wireless speaker I connected to it not it so it seems if I remove the sim card and reinstall it sometime once sometimes 2/3 tries it will work again but for a period of time then I have to go through the sim card reinstall again

by

BLESS YOU!! I was having the same intermittent calling issues, fixed by an occasional reboot, but then back to the same problem. I recently had my SD card stolen and put an old one in that used to represent solid black squares in between all my photos that I could never get rid of on another phone I used it with. I took out the SD card and I am back up and running! THANK YOU!!

by

Never mind. Piece of crap Galaxy S4 STILL does not allow me to CONSISTENTLY answer my phone or call and be heard, even though mic AND the speaker work in other apps. I have never wanted to throw something against the wall worse that this. Especially since it is INTERMITTENT!!! HELP PLEASE.

by

I did a hard reset on my phone last night, and it worked after, but this morning when I tested it, guess what? Right, a hard reset did not work. Now, I lost all my settings, downloads that were not backed up and preferences and I STILL don't have a phone that works. It is an AT&T Straight Talk Bring your own phone program. The sim card works fine in my old iPhone 4 by the way.

This is really easy to fix! Download SoundAbout from app store and set 'phone call audio' to 'earpiece'. I experienced the problem after flashing CM12 lollipop rom on my GTI505, everything was fine at first and then suddendly audio during phone calls stopped working. Hope this will help future googlers :).

SOLUTION: Samsung Galaxy S4 no audio sound during phone call.

For me it was a bad SIM Card Reader or Module IF. But it could be a bad SIM card so try a new SIM card before doing this repair or at least take it out and in.

My Service Repair Statement said it replaced two things:

Part Number Description

GH59-13279A Unit-SIM SD SOCKET; SGH-I377, 10-0013-0278

GH59-13111A MODULE-IF SUB FPCB(SGH-I337);SGH-I337,10

Called 800-726-7864 told them what the symptoms were and that the support line said it was the SIM Card Reader and they gave me a quote of $70.36 and seemed confident that the phone would be fixed. Sent to Samsung Repair Facility in Texas, total cost $70.36, and was without it for 9 days. It’s been working for 2 weeks now with no problems.

First I took it to an AT&T Service Center and all they really did was try a new SIM Card, next called Samsung Service 888-987-4357 and went thru a series of tests and they said it was a bad SIM card reader and gave me the repair center number.

Symptoms:

No audio / sound during a phone call on either side (caller or receiver)

Call connects everything is working, just no sound.

Sound for all other functions and apps works (music, voice recording, video audio).

You can tell it is going to happen when you make a call and you don’t hear any ringing just a click sound then nothing. If you hear ringing then the call will work.

Rebooting usual works for a call or two. Messing with some settings may get it to work for a period of time. But for me none of any of the other suggested fixes worked except rebooting and turning airplane mode on and off but it only fixed it for awhile.

I have used the phone for 1.5 years and never had a single hardware problem, didn’t have it heavily loaded (RAM or Memory). It just started one day out of the blue and drove me crazy.

Tried all the steps before this one and nothing.

Changed the SIM card reader and just like that it worked like a charm. Running 4.4.2

Phone could make a call, but during the call there was no sound coming from the earpiece and the person on the other side could not hear anything. Tested the earpiece via the *#0*# and earpiece worked. Tested lower mic by using S voice and that worked.

Changed SIM card reader, then both worked during call.

Thank You SO much for your information!!!! It saved me Big Time!!!!! I ordered the part of the Internet and found a YouTube video and Walla!!! It worked!!! Thank You SO much for taking the time to post your solution it made my life easier!!!! :D

by

After trying everything else on this forum, I am left with only one option, to jump aboard the Sim Card Reader ship as well. I ordered one for my I337 today. I hope it will be the "answer" to being able to answer my phone! ARGHH!!! I'll keep you posted on my success of lack thereof.

by

Since you suggested replacing the Sim Card and SD card reader, I did it today, the part was easy to replace, but after rebooting the phone I still have the same problem after 3 successful phone calls--the 4th call an hour later netted the same result! I am out of options. PLEASE, someone tell me what the heck I can do next!

by

Same thing for me too! I just replaced the SIM card reader, disabled Google now, had it working and hour later received a call and nothing!!! I am done with SAMSUNG phones.

Hi guys. Found that my sister in law had this problem. We solved it by turning off power saving mode after she noticed it happened when her battery got low. I hope this can help someone else :)

I had the same problem. I tested a wifi phone app and it worked so it wasn't a hardware issue. So then I downloaded another phone dialer app, the 2GIS Dialer (FREE) which then feeds through the phones dialer and it works. Don't ask me why or how.

I bought my phone on April 12th and from day one had problems when calls come in I can't hear party and they can't hear me. Tmobile had me remove sim card and replace. This resolved the issue for 8 to 10 hrs and same problem. Finally I read somewhere to clear cache and cookies (don't know why) but after doing that it's been over a week and no more issues. Before it was happening 4 to 5 times a day. Hope this helps.

I took out my battery, put it back in, and it worked again. It was tremendously frustrating to have someone call and there was no sound or I tried to call my voicemail and heard nothing.

Fixed: I tried many of the suggestions that I found online (sim card, SD card, reset, load new firmware, etc) to fix my son's S4 - none of these suggestions fixed the problem. The mic, ear peace, and speaker all work fine sing VOIP dialers, I felt that the issue had something to do with the firmware (BIOS) or software. Since I had already reloaded the firmware, I factory reset the phone. During the factory setup process, I decided to log into the phone using my own Google account and restore my applications. This solved the problem. I hope this information helps others. Good luck!
