Half of the screen flickers

Hi,

I recently started facing a new problem on my late 2008 Aluminum Unibody Macbook A1278.

Half of the screen (right half) keeps flickering constantly. The color of this half is different from the other half as well (a bit greyish).

When I hook it up to an external monitor the display works just fine.

Any idea what could be wrong here?

Answer this question I have this problem too

Your test with an external monitor proves your issue is within the internal display unit or the LDVS cable or the circuitry on your logic board that controls the backlight.

If you are sure the image does not look discolored and moving of the lid or thumping the lid with your finger doesn't alter the image I suspect your displays LED backlight driver is having problems (WLED). In your case you might have a solder joint thats about to fail on the chip.

Do you have the skills to solder SMT devices? And the proper tools? If you do you could try refreshing the WLED drivers solder connections.

If that didn't fix the issue the issue is likely in the backlight its self which would be a bit of work to repair or replace. You might find it easier to just replace the complete lid assembly.

Thanks Dan

Moving the lid or thumping it with the figures didnt have any effect.

I dont have the proper tools nor the skills to solder SMT devices, so I guess it is time to try and replace the complete lid assembly.

Appreciate your help Dan.

FYI - the WLED driver is on the main logic board, while the LED backlights are within the lid.

Hi, I am having the exact same problem on the same model (MacBook 2008). The right side is grey at the bottom of the screen. Any tapping or moving does not distort it and connecting to an external screen appears just fine.

I do not have the skills to solder or anything. How do I replace the complete screen lid? Can I send in my computer somewhere to get it repaired? Thanks

Matthew - You could also have a bad WLED driver which is located on the logic board. A 50-50 chance of it being the backlight in the LCD.

Thanks Dan! I am not so confident opening my macbook up as the screws are worn and I don't have a solder. Ive booked an assessment and will see what they say.

*An update: the right side is now so dark it is hard to see anything on that side, leaving me having to pull things to the left only so I can see what I am doing*

2008 used LP133WX2-TLC1 and LP133WX2-TLC2. those WX2-TLC* devices were junk. Replace screen and it will be good. Thinking it is the cable is silly wishful thinking now that the difference in price between cable and LCD is about $20 and replacing the cable is 10x as miserable as replacing the LCD. It is not the cable so don't waste time on the cable, just wishful thinking nonsense from the internet that will waste your time.
