Why does my water damaged iPhone display a blank screen?

iPhone 4s fell in a cup of water for a second, face down. Touch screen works, I can receive calls, text messages, and facebook messages but the screen is completely blank. Bear with me, I haven't found anything on this particular case online.

So my mom had a cup of water in my car cup holder and my phone slipped and fell into the cup face down. Just the headphone jack, the front facing camera and the earpiece got wet. The camera light came on and would not turn off, so I waited for the phone to die.

I stupidly tried to function it out of panic, and then when I got home, I took the battery out and let it dry for over 12 hours. The touch screen responds: I can turn the flashlight on and off, I can turn the phone on and off, enter the passcode, accept calls (I remember where certain buttons are on the screen), it vibrates when I receive text messages and facebook messages, the alarms all still work, and I was even able to plug it up to my computer. iTunes recognized it and I could update it and back it up successfully. So I'm assuming my phone works and my wifi works.

My mom took it to a repair guy (not a repair shop -.-) and he replaced the front screen with another screen and it still didn't work. The backlight works, but the screen is still black. I couldn't see anything in the sunlight either.

I'm going to try to take it apart and clean all the pieces and some have suggested changing out the battery completely (which I will, just to be safe), but I think there's a specific display part within it that's faulty and needs replacing, and replacing the entire front screen doesn't seem to fix it.

Any suggestions as to what might be wrong with the hardware? I have fixed iPhone 4's and iPhone 4s's with much success. I just need to know where the problem might be, because the phone functions perfectly normal except the screen is still blank. It even charges properly! The problem must be a minor one, I just don't know where to start. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

I know about the iFixIt links such asthis one but this is for a phone that doesn't work at all. How will this fix my display if the phone is functioning just fine?

Thanks in advance!

EDIT: I can see the display a little bit (I mean, just barely) when I shine the flashlight from another iPhone on it. It's even still fully charged even after using it a little bit, as far as operating the alarm and answering the phone.

EDIT 2: I CAN EVEN HERE THE SPEAKERS. I can operate the phone, PERFECTLY. Just a black screen, only visible with a flashlight.

Answer this question I have this problem too

I washed my iphone 5 with some laundry for a full cycle and the same thing happened to me, the touch was unresponsive though. What it ended up being was some of the pins on the FPC connection on the motherboard got shorted/burned out. So that would be something to check. Just open up the phone and disconnect the screen and look at all the connections, some may be black or corroded. If you are lucky you might get away with just cleaning them, if not youll be like me and have to replace the connector. To fix it yourself you will need some soldering experience and a microscope. Cyberdoc llc also has fpc connection repair service.

I have the exact same problem. I took it apart, cleaned all the contacts with alcohol, reassembled....and it didn't help. I have the same level of functionality that you have with your phone...everything works fine but you wouldn't even know the phone is on because you can't see anything on the screen. I do see a little ghost imaging on the screen...and even asked SIRI to turn up the screen brightness. She said it's all the way up. !@#$....all the workarounds aren't working. I guess starting with simple is best...but I'm quickly starting to think it's not a simple one.

I had similar problems with my 4S. Changed the display, battery, and power flex circuit. Everything worked fine and then the display blanked on receiving calls. It wouldn't reset even after pressing the power and home button simultaneously although the Apple logo was displayed during the reset so I didn't think it was hardware related. I ended up reseting it to factory settings without restoring it with my backup. Everything functioned, even the proximity sensor so I went ahead and loaded my backup and it's been working fine for a day or so. It's too early to say it's fixed but it's looking good. I think somewhere along the line the firmware/software got corrupted and only resetting it to the factory settings reset the problem. After it resets to the factory settings it will ask you if you want to restore your phone's options. Make sure you say NO and don't restore your backup but select the "new phone" option. When it finishes disconnect the phone from your PC and see if the basic functions are working. If it looks good restore your backup and sync it. Good luck. Make sure you make a backup before you reset it to factory settings or you will loose all you data.

it sounds like one of two things to me, either corrosion is still interfering with the lcd and a good cleaning may fix it, or some transistors/ chips related to running the lcd on the board may be damaged.

My iphone 5s was rescued from the washing machine before the first wash cycle began but was sitting in a pool of water. I tried rice for 2 days, with no response from the phone. On the third day I placed it over the air vent for a little circulation. That evening Siri was working but the screen was blank. Left it over the air vent over night. Fourth day, the screen is now visible and the phone is working in all capacities but with a very mall amount of distortion on the screen. I am hopeful that day 5 will bring full restoration! Be patient and diligent. Don't charge it up until it's completely dried out. Remove SIM card to allow more airflow.

I have the same exact problem with an iPhone 4s a friend gave me. The iPhone was dropped in a toilet, immediately turned off, and placed in a bag of rice. Following this the rice got jammed in the 30 dock connector, and my friend damaged the connector trying to dislodge the rice.

The iPhone apparently still turned on, and the alarm that was set before the incident contributed to ring every morning. When my friend gave up on the phone he gave it to me. I just started tinkering with it, and decided I should replace the dock connector and see if I could get it to hold a charge, or better yet see if the screen would miraculously start working again.

After a bout an hour of charging the iPhone showed signs of connecting to my computer, launching iTunes and such, but the screen would still not turn on.

After reading this and other posts on how certain components can break based on the ph and wether the device was fully submerged etc I have decided I would give it a shot at replacing the screen.

Seeing the original post and the issues encountered, I think the damage must be so substantial that the main logic board on your device would have to be replaced.

I hope it works! Will update

I had the same problem and just got my iphone 4 screen to come to life again with a super easy fix. Not sure if it will work for everyone but it's easy to try. Same old story, dropped the phone in water, dried it out for several days in rice, charged it, and turned it on. I could tell it was working but the screen was black. I discovered that if I shined a bright flashlight at the screen I could pretty much make out all of the icons. I thought maybe turning my screen brightness all the way up would improve the contrast so I pulled up my slide-screen utility menu (I don't know if that's its official name but it sounds good) where the flashlight and other stuff is located and as soon as I touched the screen brightness slider bar my screen light came to life. It's perfect now. I hope it works for others. Good luck.

I had the exact problem and I put my phone in rice overnight. The next day it worked. Still had very visible water marks on the screen. But at-least I could see my apps. Basically I forgot my phone in the shampoo hanger in the washroom and someone else took a shower after me and the water went inside the phone. I panicked and quickly press the power button to see if it worked. It turned on and I could see the screen with serious water marks. Then after about 3 seconds the screen went black. From this point I could not see anything on the phone but it was working. How did I know? I switched the vibrate-sound button on the left side of the phone. So I knew it is still working. I turned the phone off by pressing the power button for 5 seconds then swiping right from left on the top of the phone screen. I saw this post and got a container and filled it with rice. Put the phone inside with an angle so the charging port is facing down. Made sure the entire phone was covered with rice. Then put the lid on the container. Then went to sleep. When I woke up I took the phone out and turned it on and I saw the apple sign with a white screen. The phone powered back on and works properly but has seriously visible water marks on the screen. Which I am currently researching how to get rid of. Any suggestions would be much appreciated.
