How to run Hardware test?

I have a Macbook early 2009 A1181. Running Mavericks 10.9.4, I would like to know how do I run a Hardware Test/ Diagnostics to trouble shoot my Macbook?

I have tried shutting down my Mac and pressing 'D' key while powering up when I did this my Mac goes into recovery mode and always stays that way.

Please Help?

If you still have your original recovery CD/DVD you can restart your system off of it to get access to the tool on the CD/DVD.

What are you having problems with? Maybe the symptoms can tell us what needs to be looked at. Can you fill us in?

Screen goes blank after sometime, but can see faint image. When connected to external monitor the Macbook works fine. When I toggle with the F1 & F2 buttons a few times the screen stays lit sometimes for a short duration sometimes even for days. I wonder if it is a LCD issue or Inverter problem.

Dan I tried it with the CD/DVD it either ejects or the CD/DVD doesn't show up on Desktop.

OK, that points to CFL lamp or the inverter and inverter cable. Apple Hardware Test won't diagnose this.

Apple Hardware Test is included on the original set of discs shipped with your MacBook. Apple began including AHT on the startup disk of some models with the release of Lion OS X 10.7.5. Since 2013, Apple Diagnostics have been included with new Apple products. You will need the original discs to run the tests on an A1181.

Thanks Dan,

Looks like I need to go in for a complete New LCD Screen assembly.

Not necessarily, If the backlight is strong I would first replace the inverter and the inverter cable, both tend to wear out before the CFL's.
