SSD Compatibility Issues of old SATA 1 to new SATA 3?

Older Macbook pro (Model A1226 Santa Rosa 15") A needed upgrade to either an SSD or an SSDHD is planned. I currently have SATA 1 but new drives run SATA 2 or 3. What compatibility issues should I be aware of before purchase? Please help.
