Why does my disc drive make a loud noise after updating the firmware?

Hi everyone,

I updated my Macbook's firmware with the 1.4 EFI update (and subsequently installed the SuperDrive 3.0 update).

The update stopped the disc drive sound when waking from sleep, but did not stop the sound when starting up/restarting.

I tried reinstalling the firmware update but got a dialog box that said that it has already been installed.

Any ideas on how to stop the disc drive sound when starting up/restarting?

Thanks,

Chris

I agree with QEII it wouldn't be possible to fix without disconnecting the disk drive.

I would take it to an Apple Store for a second opinion. The firmware update should have worked and a fresh install of the OSX may not correct the issue since it seems to be firmware based.

Good Luck and let us know how you make out, it will be good to know how you solved it.

Regards!

I don't think you can without disconnecting the drive. When you turn it on it looks for sources to boot from. (Hard Drive, Optical Drive, Firewire etc) Hopefully it isn't too inconvenient.

Thanks for your responses! If Apple doesn't send out a new update in the next couple weeks I'll bring it and have it checked out.

Call Apple for some assistance. It may be an error in how the updates are installed.
