What is this black sticky square behind glass

I removed my first cracked glass off of an iphone 4 today but during the process I got stumped because of a black sticky square that was attached to the back off the glass and a chrome plate. It was in between the plate and glass. How do I remove this and do I need it? And what is it? I do have a heat gun and all tools. Please help
