Why does my main display only work when paired to my secondary?

I bought a macbook (white core 2 duo) with a cracked lcd screen and busted battery thinking I could easily fix it. I replaced the lcd and the battery and installed a fresh copy of Lion OS. Now for some reason the main display will only come on when connected to a secondary monitor. I have tried every resolution available but the minute i un plug the secondary display the main display goes off. Is there another part I need to replace?
