Hard Disk Failure MacBook Pro

My MacBook Pro, which is over 5 years old, died last week. I get a grey screen, followed by a flashing question mark.

I wasn't supplied with any discs.

I've tried starting up with Control Option PR, Control C etc with no luck.

I've purchased another Mac, but need to get information off my old mac - so just need to start it up to gather that.

Any clues?

Hi Elizabeth, have you tried running it in internet recover, by pressing cmd+r?

it should bring you to internet recovery menu, where you can run disk utility and wipe the whole hard drive and re install the operating system again

However if it fails to install after the wipe, then your hard drive might be faulty.
