Black Screen and lock button not working... What should I do?

Hello!

Today my iPhone's screen just turned off and doesn't seem to work. I believe it's a software problem, so I thought the best idea would be to force a reboot (you know, holding the lock and home buttons at the same time). However, I don't have a lock button, since it has been broken for some months now.

What can I do? Any tips on how to drain the battery of the iPhone as quickly as possible? I have started to send Messages from my Mac because that way it will be forced to emit the notification, but this could take hours.

Thanks for your help!

I've just had the same problem. You simply need to factory reset your iPhone by connecting to iTunes via the USB port on a computer and restoring the phone.

If your iPhone's 'Find my iPhone' is enabled you will need to use the steps below. (This method resets your iPhone instantly as long as you have it charged)

1. Go to the iCloud website.

2. Log in and click 'Find my iPhone'.

3. Click the ALL DEVICES drop-down and select your broken device.

4. Click the 'Erase iPhone' option.

The Apple logo will appear on your iPhone's screen, and then it will install the basic software.

Thanks :)

The best thing to try is to take the back off and disconnect the battery.

try pressing down on the back of the iphone just above the apple and to the left. this is where the connector for the LCD is. It may have worked itself loose. Hopefully you can reseat it without having to do this.

If that doesn't work and you dont want to take it apart, try plugging it into itunes and put it into the recovery mode. there are posts here that can walk you through that.

Thank you a lot for your help.

My battery has drained (I have been all morning FaceTime-calling myself and sending iMessages to achieve this...) and when plugging it in, the battery logo has appeared, so I guess everything should work well from now on.

I thought it was a software thing since it could have been caused by some Cydia packages. I'll do some research to avoid the problem next time.

After some hours thinking I wouldn't be able to use my iPhone again... Everything seems to be OK. Thanks, Hitordie!

Hello, if your phone stucking at black screen, you have two choices: change a new screen, or recover data from your phone and buy a new phone.

It's very simple for everyone to change a new screen, just take it to repair shop and ask someone for help, but not everyone know how to recover data from the broken screen Android phone.

In fact, the simplest way to recover data from Samsung with blank screen is using Samsung Data Recovery. This program empowers you to recover contacts, text messages, call logs, WhatsApp, photos, videos, music and more from Android Samsung phone and tablet, including Galaxy S3/4/5, Galaxy Note and Galaxy Tab. Even if your phone cannot be turned on or the touch screen is unusable completely, the program can make the data on the phone accessible and recoverable.

Apparently instead of taking the battery out you can just put the phone in the freezer for 15-20 minutes, then plug it into a charger to restart it. Just saw a youtube video about it

by

@mesanos does that actually work?? wouldnt it damage your phone more??..

by

Thank you so much for your advice, it actually works! My lock button was broken a long time ago and I didn't get it fixed. My screen was stuck at the home page and would not respond. It would still charge when I plugged the USB in but other than that it wouldn't budge. Usually when this problem arises (not to the extent that the screen has zero response; just slight screen dysfunction), I would still be able to use the assistive touch and shut down my phone, charge it (to turn it on) and it will work. However, this time round there was no way I could restart my phone and make it work (the screen just stays on all the while); until I came upon this post and I tried to apply pressure to the back of the phone at the position that was mentioned by Hitordie, and it worked instantly! Now my phone is back to normal and I gained one new trick to fix my broken screen everytime this problem occur. Thank you so much!

Due to my lock button being broken and also my home screen was broken, the screen was completely blank but siri worked!

I left my phone over night to completely die then charged it this morning and now it works fine, just a bit slow but i blame that on the IOS 9 update.

I hope this helps someone :)

I had this happen to me last night (iPhone 4S) and my top button has not been working for some time.

I could still use Siri (speak to her and hear her but no see anything) so I knew it was just a screen issue.

I read through many MANY forums the general consensus is to restart the phone, but without one of your buttons working that is difficult. For me it was a combination of solutions;

One person suggested holding the home button and the volume + button together for 25 seconds which can force a restart.

Another suggested running your battery flat, again hard to do when you can't access the screen. So I called my phone A LOT and talked to Siri to run it down.

I think it was a combination of both things because my phone eventually turned itself off. I only know this because Siri stopped responding.

Then I plugged it into a power source and the empty battery icon appeared. About 10-15mins of charge and the screen turned on.

I hope this helps someone else out there.

I downloaded software called Reiboot which did the trick for me. It's strange that nobody has mentioned it here. It's free and allows you to put your phone into recovery mode and then break out of recovery mode, effectively rebooting your iOS device from your computer. They appear to have a Mac version and Windows version.

An easy solution to this is to download vshare onto your computer and then click restart iPhone and it will work! Also you can then use vshare if you like, as an App Store alternative which offers as far as I can tell every paid app on the app store for free

Use siri and tell siri to play music on repeat and let your phone play the music till it dies and then once it has died you can turn it back on by charging it.

It happened to me as well. My lock button doesn't work. What I did is I rebooted it on the software called 'syncios' that Iused whenever I put music on my phone. They have this toolkit section as well where you will just connect your phone to the computer and click 'reboot' or shutdown (because it will automatically restart since it's plug in on your computer). It worked for me

I had the same problem.

What happened is last night i was about to sleep i checked my phone and any of the buttons aren't working, of course i went to search how to fix it and most of the suggestions are pressing the lock & home button at the same time for 10-15 seconds but mine didn't work considering i have a broken lock button for months now. and I went to search again and see i wasn't the only one so i felt relieved a bit.

I've read everyone's suggestions here but I did one strategy that worked 100%. What you should do is completely drain your battery (I left mine to drain for 11 hours) and after that you should charge it in the computer and wait. If the low battery sign turned on then u should wait for the apple logo then ur saved.

This solution will help only if you have access to the phone with iTunes or have previously backed up the iPhone to your computer. If possible, do a backup of all of the data on your phone. Then head over to iCloud.com, go to Find my iPhone, and hit erase phone. This will do a restore of the phone without requiring you to do anything on the phone itself. Within seconds you will see the apple logo appear and the device will boot. Then, connect to iTunes, restore from backup, and the phone should be right where you left it. Worked for me with the same issue and hope it can help someone else!

hey, i have had this happen to me quite a few times.

my lock button is broken too, so what i do is just wait for the phone to die.

tell siri to play music, maybe it will drain the battery faster

it took about 10 hours for my phone's battery to die on standby after being fully charged

As I was on face time with my mate and I locked my screen, suddenly my phone went black I pressed the home button several times but it didn't work.

My lock screen button hasn't been working for 3 months I was scared because I thought it was permanently damaged the notification sounds worked, but I needed my phone especially because its 3 hours until the new year.

So I suggest draning your battery out fully and plug it to a computer and it will switch on !

Drain your iPhone battery.

If you're having 3G data Switched on, then this should be easy. Use the assistive touch or the home button OR CONNECT AN EARPHONE WITH COMMANDBUTTONS (keep pressing the main button on the earphone to activate siri) and talk to SIRI. Ask random questions to speed the battery draining. Switch on WiFi and Bluetooth to drain battery.

Switch to camera app and take some photos using the volume buttons in a dark room so that it uses flash and drain battery. Once completely drained. Plug it back into power.

You're all set.

Takes time. But. Only the possible solution if you're stuck on a screen with a broken home button.

Hold Home button then insert usb cable to charge, your phone should go to recovery mode (itunes icon will appear on the screen). Then using "Reiboot" software you will be able to exit from recovery mode. Wait till phone reboots completely and you are good to go.

Putting your phone in the freezer for 15 minutes actually works to restart your phone if the home button doesn't work. Make sure to put your phone in a ziplock bag so you avoid the chance of water damage. Once you take your phone out let it sit for 5-7 minutes to warm up a bit. Then hold down the side button for 3 seconds until the apple pops up if that doesn't work then plug your phone in until the apple pops up on the screen. Then your phone will restart and everything will work properly.

Put your phone in the freezer for 15 minutes make sure it is in a baggy so it does not get any sort of water in it after take it out let it warm up for about 7 minutes then plug it in see if apple icon or charging icon comes on and if not plug it in to your computer
