Boots up but display is black

Boots up... I hear all the sounds, but screen stays black.

I shined a flashlight next to display no faint images... sorry this is an LCD right so there would be no faint images... am I correct on this?

Connected laptop to external display .... everything looks good....I see the desktop, looked at profile.... 150 gig HD with 10 gig free.

Now, I can safely assume that the DISPLAY is bad right? or is there something on the logic board that might be bad that makes the display look dead. How can I test this if I have access to the logic board. Will the PRAM battery cause the display not to turn on?????

Thanks

Edit: the model number is A1212; running OS 10.5.8; MacBook Pro2,1; Intel Core 2 Duo / 2.33 GHz; It has 3 GB of memory; Serial # is W86481ZAW0M

If this happened all of a sudden I'd reseat the display data cable: MacBook Pro 17" Models A1151 A1212 A1229 and A1261 Display Data Cable Replacement

Shine a flashlight on the screen and if you see the desktop (when it's on) replace the inverter.

I've had the same problem. I've looked on many discussion groups and came to the conclusion that the logic board is dead. so ... i've baked it. put it in the oven (not microwave -- gas only)... heat it up to 200 degrees Celsius and after it's hot, put the logic board inside for 8 minutes. that's how i've fixed mine :D
