Replaced Hard Drive now refuses to read any install disk

1. Replaced 1Tb Seagate drive with the same model, it went very smoothly

2. Will not read install disc, I have tried a 10.6 and 10.7 disc. It would pull up the 10.6 disc when option was held down as a boot option, when selected would do nothing. It displays a blinking folder when no disc is present.

Is this due to the discs or the computer? (old os for example)

When you booted from the 10.6 Retail installation disk or the original system installation disk, did you use Disk utilities to format the drive before trying to install a system?

No I was unable to use Disk utilities, the disk would not even be recognized and begin to run.
