snapped one side of memory lock off, won't start

While upgrading my 1176 mac mini memory the top slot right side locking tab broke off. I put a memory stick in anyway but it wouldn't start properly. Took it out and it booted just fine. Is there any way the memory thing can be replaced or is it soldered to the logic board? I was going from one to two gigs in each slot - now it works with 2 gig stick in the bottom slot so I'm back where I started.

Seat it as well as you can and tape it down into place with Kaptan tape: Polyimide Tape

Thank you so much.

I'm also thinking the ram itself may have given up. The ram was holding tight on the right side. Do you think it's possible for the left side not being exactly tight but well seated would cause it to fail to power up properly? Do the modules have to be touching each other top and bottom. I ask because the top is empty now and I've had this little machine open so many times I'm wanting to leave well enough alone. . . . maybe.

Your experience is very valuable!

You know, I think the maximum RAM in this machine is two GB. What's the last three figures of your serial number?

Interesting question. This was a 1.66 mghz- the one that you could upgrade the cpu. So it's a hybrid. Now it's a core duo with a 2.16 cpu. The last 3 numbers of the SN are HU36.

I hope that helps.

The maximum RAM IS 2GB. Look under your system profiler and see if the two GB stick is being read as a one GB. http://everymac.com/systems/apple/mac_mi...

Thanks for getting back to me. My system profiler is actually reading:

Size: 2 GB

Speed: 667 MHz

Status: OK

Manufacturer: 0x7F4F000000000000

Part Number: 0x4A4D3636375153552D324720202020202020

Serial Number: 0x0009CFBD

Does this mean the second slot can take another 2 gigs? I would really, really like to understand what is possible. And, if the power-up was failing because of a loose bank 0 or a failed ram stick or that it only takes 2 gigs in whatever configuration.

This is hard for a little old lady :)
