My iPhone won't restore even after putting it in DFU mode.

I recently bought an iPhone off of a friend, it's locked and jail broken.When I plug it into iTunes it won't restore because of a password. So I put it into DFU mode and it didn't do anything different. It will start to restore but stop after it extracts the software. I'm puzzled, if anyone can help it would be appreciated.
