Grey screen with file with question mark on it

My 2005 imac has a grey screen with a question mark on it. whats wrong with it and how do I fix it?

Try booting up with the grey recovery disk you got with the system and run Disk Utility you maybe able to save the drive, but you may need to reformat the drive and install a fresh copy of the OS.

Otherwise you'll need a new HD as Machead stated. Given the age of your system you may want to think about a newer new or used system to replace it.

No boot drive (Operating System) found. Generally indicates a thrashed HD. Replace the HD install the OS.
