Video Card Replacement. How?

Hi Guys,

My iMac 27" Mid 2011 (EMC 2429) recently broke down due to a graphics-chip failure. I don't know wether it overheated or just broke for some reason, fact is it needs a replacement. I read about somebody having his card replaced and it wouldn't require soldering, what I was thinking the whole time (

My graphic chip is (or more likely was) a AMD Radeon 6970m with 2 gigs of video ram.

First of all: Has anybody done something like this before a can tell me from their experiences? And, more important, can i buy an iMac graphic chip like this (or better) somewhere separately?

I would really much appreciate if someone would take the time and answer to his. Thank you!

Greetings from Germany,

Jonas Naue

I have the same problem here in Geneva but the Apple store keeps on insisting to replace the logic board instead of the video card. I believe it's the video card that has to be replace because I do repair computers before when I was still using PCs. I can repair Macs but parts are expensive if you buy them on-line and there is no computer parts store here in Geneva that sells Mac parts.

Try eBay for parts. And Tim's laptop service manuals for repair guide. They have OFFICIAL apple technician guides for many apple products
