If you suspect that the button went bad, use a cable like http://www.ebay.com/itm/Headphone-Jack-P... and follow the headphone jack guide found iPod Nano 6th Generation Headphone Jack Assembly Replacement . Since the buttons are on the headphone jack cable, that is the guide to use. I will warn you that it is a difficult repair so be careful.
