Cant see new HDD in startup disk but visible in Disk utility

I replaced a faulty HDD on a Macbook A1181 with a new WD 250 Sata II, i formatted the HDD with mac os journaled but this HDD is not visible for installation. When using the original installation CD I get error message The OS cannot be installed on the computer. I tried to place the hdd in external drive but still cant see the dive in startup utility or install the OS the drive but it still does show up in disk utility.

Your drive may be to fast and need to be jumpered down. But I'm concerned about the error message. Can you give us the last three figures of your serial number. Also tell us about the installation disk you are using, what color is it and is there an number on it.

Thanks for your reply mayer. I finally tried it with 3 different drives all with the same result, another one was 5400 RPM SATA 2 and finally 5400 RPM SATA1- I had the same result with all drives. They are detected in Disk utility, I can format/ repair/ partition them etc but cant install OS on it. The CD I'm using I believe shipped with the laptop, its the grey Installation disk, serial number 2Z691-5975-A. I have also reset PRAM.
