How can I get past the gray startup screen?

I recently bought a kindle fire hd, and began to charge it by plugging it into my MacBook's USB port. Now my MacBook won't start up. It remains on the gray startup screen and that's all it does. What can I do?

Options

First unplug any external devices. Unplug the the MacBook, press and hold down the power button for 5 seconds. Plug it back in and restart while holding down the P,R, option & Apple key, keep holding while it tones three times then release. Let us know your outcome. Thanks
