Why won't the computer boot up regularly?

My problem started when i was in mac os 9, i went to startup disk to select Mac OSX (10.0) and after i restarted into OSX, it wouldn't boot up. it just gives me a happy Mac logo and a couple sentences, one of them is "we are hanging here". I can't get back to os9, what should i do?

This computer is grey and has a CD-RW drive (only).

Sounds like a potential HD error. Boot from your install disk and run Tools->Disk Utilites->Disk First Aid: Repair disk. If that fails your HD is shot... only you can determine if you want to put money in a machine that old or just put it towards a new box.
