The problem on my mac is that the cursor will not actually click on anything. If I run it over the drop down menus, they show up, and I can highlight options in them, but I can't click on them(or anything on the desktop).

Take a thin piece of hard plastic and run it around the track pad joint to see if you can dislodge any foreign material.

Good question. Please try to plug in an external mouse if this works, you know you are dealing with a hardware issue. However if it does not work you are dealing with a software issue.
