Why is my laptop stuck on the apple startup screen
The white apple start up screen comes on and the little circle just spins, it is a black and white spinning circle under the apple logo

Could be a corrupted system folder or a failing hard drive. Start up from your original ystem installation disk, "C key". Go to the second screen pull down menu to Utilities > Disk Utilities and see if you can repair the hard drive. Let us know your results and we can go from there.
